Dear Colleague:

Our profession faces urgent challenges and we need your financial help to address it.

There are six states that don’t have acupuncture licensure acts; the federal programs (Medicare, Tricare, etc.) do not yet cover acupuncture; and the profession needs a unified competency model for educational and regulatory standards among other important initiatives.

Our nation’s healthcare system is changing rapidly. As a medical profession we need to act NOW to make sure we have a future.

As your national association, the AAAOM is committed to protecting the profession but we can’t do it alone.

We propose three initial strategies to address these immediate challenges:

  1. Obtain licensure in the remaining unlicensed states to allow the practice of acupuncture and Oriental  medicine (AOM). We will assist the leadership organizations in these states.
  2. Pursue coverage for AOM services under federal programs
  3. Educate third-party payers and healthcare providers on the qualifications and requirements to practice acupuncture (e.g., dry-needling)

These efforts require the hiring of expert staff, lobbyists, legal services and consultants—a cause worthy of your financial investment to ensure your practice continues to thrive. There has never been a more crucial time to act and your help is needed now.

The need to counter misinformation about acupuncture has never been greater. Other healthcare providers are aggressively pursuing the right to use acupuncture and related modalities by renaming these techniques and promoting practice under their licenses, often without adequate training needed to practice. These providers have strong, unified, aggressive campaigns and we need to present a unified responsive voice to clarify that dry-needling, intramuscular stimulation and other terms are, in fact, acupuncture by another name.

In 2012, thanks to the efforts of the AAAOM and our national and state partners, NEARLY 54 MILLION AMERICANS IN SIX STATES and four territories now have access to acupuncture that is covered by health insurance. These practitioners will be able to serve more patients and significantly grow their practices. This is just the tipping point, and with your financial support we can do much more.

The Time To Act Is NOW!

We need $3,139,000 to accomplish these critical goals. We ask that you commit to the Acupuncture Action Fund:

  • $20 a month for 12 months or make a one-time donation of $240—for 67¢ a day you will be investing in and protecting your future; or
  • $50/month for a total of $600 yearly ($1.64/day); or
  • $100/month for a total of $1,200 yearly ($3.29/day)

When you make your donation online, we will automatically bill your credit card monthly based on the amount you specify. Your contribution to this fund goes towards the advancement of the acupuncture profession. It is one of the most valuable investments you will ever make for your practice and professional future.

When you donate, please be sure to let us know if you would like your name listed online on the "Acupuncture Heroes wall to recognize your contribution and support of the profession. If you have any questions about the action plan or how you can do your part, please contact us at membership@aaaomonline.org.

Yours truly for the future of acupuncture,

AAAOM Board of Directors
